In 2005 a company purchased MySpace for close to 580 million dollars; just 6 years later it was resold at a price nearly 35 million dollars. In those painful 6 years, Facebook astonishingly acquired the spotlight and became the social media giant it is today. There is much speculation as to why MySpace failed, even with its enormous head start; personally I believe it is because they sold out.
What made Facebook great was the exclusivity, and cleanliness of the program. While MySpace had loud profile pages, Facebook was simply blue and white. Instead of being bombarded by advertisements on MySpace, users could choose what to read and see on Facebook.
Personally, I lost a lot of respect for Facebook the moment they opened the doors to anyone. The reason I was such a fan, was because it was only the people I knew from school. Now users get solicited by spam accounts, there are advertisements all down the sides, some up top, and every day someone sends a request to join in on a stupid game.
Despite my disapproval, Facebook does offer a great marketing opportunity and it would be unwise to just ignore its power. Even though it was the thing that I disliked about Facebook the most, for years now I have been helping businesses get on Facebook and learn how to market to their demographics.
Through all of the advertisements, and spam messages, and game requests shines a beacon of hope. Though many have tried in the past, all have failed; but now a small beta warrior enters the social media arena in effort to overthrow the multi billion dollar sell out. This beta has billions of fans, and is branded as one of the most successful companies in history, it is Google!
“Google+” is the name, and bringing respectable social media back to the world is the task at hand. The beta version is currently at capacity, and is accepting no more new members. Now might be the time to take advantage of Facebook, advertise your business more aggressively, as it might be declining in popularity soon. It is unsure as of now what Google’s policy will be with businesses, but I personally hope it is prohibited.
As someone in Marketing, I guess I am on my toes to figure out how to adapt. As a member in social media though, I couldn’t be happier.
